Start Magic by learning the English name and set before you buy

Last updated

Hong Kong shops treat Magic as a singles market, so learn the English name and set before you decide between a precon and a box.

Key points

  • Booster traffic in Hong Kong is thinner than PTCG traffic.
  • Quotes are in HKD, and singles usually beat opening a box.
  • Hareruya Tournament Center in Takadanobaba is the verified specialist here.

If you fly to Tokyo to play, Hareruya Tournament Center in Takadanobaba is the specialist address on file.

How Wizards split “where to play” on 2026-08-31

magic.wizards.com listed four routes that day: Tabletop, covering local shops, home play, and SpellTable; MTG Arena on PC, Mac, Android, and iOS, free to start with 3 digital packs on login; Magic Online on PC, with Legacy and Modern called out; and Competitive, covering the pro tour plus paper and digital events.

The news that day covered tight North American supply for Reality Fracture Play Boosters, the Secret Lair A Perfectly Normal Superdrop on 2026-08-31, and Arena Direct The Hobbit from 2026-08-28 to 09-06. Those are product windows, not Hong Kong shelf counts.

First buys

Opening a box before you have locked a decklist usually costs more than buying the singles. A paper starter means an official precon, or a theme already sitting on the counter. Magic does not share the Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh number schemes, so do not search OPxx or SVP here.

For shops, read MTG shops. For prices, read the MTG price lookup. For online packs, read MTG online pull.

Graded-card packs online

On 2026-08-31 the logged-out Cardz.game catalog showed Pokémon pools, and MTG pool names were not listed. If a pool is up when you look, the flow is still 85–90% instant buyback with one authentic graded card per pack. Check the catalog on the day you pay.

FAQ

Should I buy a box or singles first?

Singles, in most cases. Opening a box before you have locked a decklist usually costs more than simply buying the cards that list needs.

Can I search Magic cards with Pokémon-style numbers?

No. Magic does not share the Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh number schemes, so codes such as OPxx or SVP will not find anything.

Is MTG Arena a substitute for paper?

It is a separate route. Wizards listed Tabletop, Arena, Magic Online, and Competitive as four different ways to play on 2026-08-31.

Were MTG pools available online?

Not on 2026-08-31. The logged-out Cardz catalog showed Pokémon pools that day, and no MTG pool names were listed.

Next steps

Ask in Mong Kok, or go to Hareruya Tournament Center Tokyo (Japanese). Check values on CardZ Marketcap, searching by English name plus set, and remember the 2026-08-30 number one was a Pokémon card, so do not paste $2,750.
